The Medical University of Bialystok is a state institution of higher education, created by terms of ordinance of the Council of Ministers of February 3rd, 1950. At first, it provided medical instruction to future doctors, and later, as needs arose, to dentists, pharmacists, nurses and midwives. Until now, more than 10,000 doctors have graduated from the Medical Faculty, over 2,000 dentists from the Division of Dentistry, over 500 masters in Pharmacy, over 800 masters in Medical Analytics and almost 40 bachelors in Medical Analytics . At present, the teaching staff of Medical University of Bialystok consists of 83 professors, 87 associate professors, 515 instructors and research workers. The total number of students exceeds 4000. The number of foreign students in the academic year 2005/2006 amounts to 58, from Norway, Sweden, Germany and Canada . The medical curriculum has been adapted to meet the standards of the European Union in order to maintain the process of improvement in the quality of teaching. The experienced staff of the University guarantee an adequately high level of theoretical and practical instruction provided in well-equipped lecture halls, seminar rooms and phantom rooms. Two university hospitals with up-to-date diagnostic devices, secure bedside teaching.

The Administration of University is located in the 17th-century Branicki Palace, situated in the city centre and surrounded by the palace park adjacent to the municipal park and woody areas. It is also within walking distance to the teaching and hospital complex comprising the basic science departments, university hospitals, dormitories, and sports and recreational facilities. This student-friendly location is an unquestionable advantage of the Medical University of Bialystok. Short distances enable foot commuting and time saving.
Students interested in extra-curriculum activities are welcome to join students' scientific societies, sports and tourist groups, academic choir and clubs.
The Medical University of Bialystok is an inseparable part of the Bialystok academic milieu. Our city is an active centre of education, with a few higher education institutions, such as the University of Bialystok, Polytechnic, Music Academy or the University of Public Administration. The total number of students in a city of almost 300,000 inhabitants amounts to 46,000.

The Medical University of Bialystok has 3 faculties: the Faculty of Medicine with the Division of Dentistry, the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Division of Laboratory Medicine, and the Faculty of Nursing and Health Care, offering courses in the divisions of Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Public Health and Medical Rescue.
